Postural Correction

Since the day you started sitting in a classroom or reading a book, something unusual began to occur to your spine. The forward head carriage created whilst looking down at books and sitting longer and longer caused strains on the body. Now moving on many years since, alot of our postural stress and strains are from habits and use of technology devices that have become a normal part of life.

Having good sitting, sleeping or standing posture is not just about how you look on the outside, but has a lot to do with what is happening on the inside. Your spine is designed to be curved (side on) in the neck, mid-back and lower back on purpose to carry stresses and loads evenly through each segment. Accumulated strains or bad habits tend to alter these curves and therefore create difficulty in being able to regain good posture by just standing up straight. After all, good posture and correct curvature through the spine allows the body to function from a neutral position as opposed to a stressed position.

You would never bend forward from the back and lift weights at the gym as it is recognised as “bad technique”. This bad technique creates an overload of stress and weight in joints and discs, which are not capable of handling such strain. The same goes with bad posture and the stress it causes on the spine.

Chiropractors are posture experts, focusing on examining and locating areas in the spine which need aligning and mobilising in order to help the body return to a neutral spine and therefore decrease pain and discomfort.

The following are reasons why good posture equals to good health:

1) Helps maintain the proper alignment of bones and joints in order for our muscles to be used correctly, reducing the abnormal wearing of the surfaces of the joints that can be the cause of joint pain and degenerative arthritis.

2) Lessens the stress on the ligaments, holds the spinal joints, decreases the chance of an injury.

3) Allows the muscles to work effectively and it also allows our body to use reduced energy preventing muscle fatigue.

4) It helps avoid overuse disorders, muscle strain and muscular and back pain.

Posture has always been seen as a structural matter, but this is far from the truth. Groundbreaking research over the years has unfolded the neurological (vestibular) implications of bad posture as well as other systems such as the respiratory system. How we breathe, balance, move and think all impact our posture. Chiropractic sets itself apart from other therapies by directly influencing the neuromusculoskeletal system through unique spinal, pelvic and cranial adjustments.
